Stara Planina (eng. Old Mountain). The Balkan region was named after the Turkish name for this mountain (Balkan, turkish: a chain of wooded mountains). During the summer months, whole herds of semi-wild horses run freely on the slopes of Midžor, the highest peak of the Western Balkan Mountains, as well as the highest in Serbia. From the mountain surroundings spas and springs can be found in all directions. Near one of them, the coldest natural spring in Europe, local people make cheese kept in a cave, the famous culinary speciality.
Stara Planina is a fast developing region which is set to become new touristic attraction in Serbia.
